Firework Safety

Fireworks are legally allowed to be used in Jersey all year around, but we want you to be completely safe and understand the types of fireworks you are using. That is why you can always contact us for proper professional advice.

As long as everyone follows the right safety procedures and remembers that fireworks can be dangerous if misused, a fantastic and safe time may be enjoyed by everyone.

Know the rules

ONLY buy fireworks from licensed retailers. Starburst Fireworks will always happily advise you which shops you should use to obtain the best customer advice.

  • Only buy fireworks that are certified to current UK safety standards, which may differ from other countries. In doubt, consult us. Most fireworks will comply with BSEN15947 ( CE compliant). You may also see UKCA markings, which are perfectly acceptable.
  • Always keep fireworks in a closed box. Take them out one at a time and close the lid.
  • Never put fireworks in your pocket.
  • Be considerate. Let your neighbours know you are planning an event.
  • Avoid setting off fireworks late at night. Currently, Jersey law has no set times, but we recommend not setting firework off after 1030pm.
  • The exceptions are:
    • Bonfire night (November 5th) 11pm.
    • New Year’s Eve (December 31st) Not after 1am.
    • Liberation Day (May 9th) 11pm
    • Diwali (dates vary) 11pm.
    • Chinese New Year (varies) 11pm.
  • Ensure your pets are safe.
  • Carefully follow the Instructions on each firework.
  • NEVER go back to a fireworks once lit. (Some fireworks are dual fused and specific time restraints apply) READ your Instructions.
  • Never throw fireworks.
  • Always light fireworks at arms length with a Portlier or Taper.
  • Light Sparklers one at a time and wear suitable gloves.
  • Never give Sparklers to children under 5.
  • Never throw spent fireworks on a bonfire.

Types of fireworks

  • CAT F1 – These are smaller fireworks suitable for either Indoor or outdoor use and generally have a very small safety distance.
  • CAT F2 – These are commonly known as Garden Fireworks suitable for outdoor use only. Generally the recommended safety distance between audience and firework is 8 metres, although if at all possible you should increase this distance.
  • CAT F3 – The most popular fireworks ! These are medium to large fireworks with a safety distance minimum recommendation of 25 metres between audience and firework. Although you should always increase the distance if possible.
